Busting Stress With CBD - Does it Work?

We know all about stress at Kalpana NYC - it’s the main ailment we hear from our customers. The right essential oils in a diffuser are great at immediate stress relief, but CBD oil is anti-stress power at its best.

If you haven’t heard of CBD yet, you must be living under a rock. In that case, stress might not be a big problem for you. But in a city like New York, stress is an inescapable reality.

Most of the time, the best response to stress is to… stop stressing about it! Stress gets a bad rep, but it’s actually an important tool which helps to keep us safe and motivated. But sometimes it can get a bit too much, even for the most resilient among us. But can CBD help?

Does CBD Help With Stress?

Thankfully, the short answer is: yes! Pretty much every piece of research we found which examines CBD’s effect on stress and anxiety comes up with the same result: CBD is super helpful for the stress heads among us - and it won’t get you high.

CBD’s stress-busting effects are thought to come, in part, from its interaction with certain areas of our brains. Of particular interest are a type of serotonin receptor called 5-HT1A receptors, and a process called neurogenesis.

Neurogenesis is a process of rebuilding which occurs naturally inside our brains. The brains of people suffering from chronic stress and anxiety show measurable differences in brain structure. Compounds which promote neurogenesis - like CBD - can help to reverse these changes and, by doing so, reduce stress and anxiety.

5-HT1A receptors are thought to play a part in the regulation of mood, and are one of the targets of the most successful class of antidepressant drug, known as SSRIs. Scientists suspect that CBD interacts with these same receptors and that this contributes to the CBD’s profoundly relaxing effects.

The best part? Unlike traditional treatments for stress and anxiety, CBD doesn’t come with a list of side effects as long as your arm.

Is CBD Safe?

Given the complex effects of CBD, and especially how it works in a similar way to some antidepressants, it’s fair to wonder if it’s safe to take. Again, the short answer is: yes!

Pretty much all of the available studies say the exact same thing: CBD is super safe, and side effects are typically mild to non-existent. One important side effect to note is that CBD can make some people a little drowsy, so stay away from driving and heavy machinery until you’re sure how it affects you.

It’s important to remember that CBD can interact with certain medications and supplements. So, if you’re taking anything else it’s important to do your research or check with a health professional if you’re not sure.

In particular, if you’re taking any drug which interacts with grapefruit juice, you need to check with your doctor before starting CBD supplements. Similarly, if you’re undergoing treatment for a diagnosed condition like anxiety, it can’t hurt to check in with your docs before starting any new supplement - including CBD.

Still, for the vast majority of consumers, CBD is perfectly safe and extremely well tolerated - plus the effects speak for themselves! If you’re coping with daily anxiety, CBD is 100% worth a shot.
